Dish Towel Quilt??

One of the little boys I take care of, Haiden is turning 2 in June... His favorite song to sing is Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star... When ever we are in Walmart's fabric department we see these star fabric fat quarters... It ALWAYS brings on several rounds of Twinkle, Twinkle... So that inspired the quilt, I asked him if he wanted Jenny to make him a star blanket... He said, "Oh YES!".... With three fat quarters and 5 inch squares I made the top, I then cut green stars out of fleece and since I am not a fan of "ties" on quilts and I don't have a quilting machine, I do the next best thing... Sew something to attach front to back and batting...
Then came the dilemma, I didn't have any coordinating fabric for the back, I hadn't planned on finishing the top so quickly, but I did have a three pack of flour sack dish towels I bought on clearance in my fabric cabinet, I knew I would use them for sewing, and the colors ended up being PERFECT for the quilt, I cut three strips {one from each towel}, and sewed them together for my backing...

I love the back as much as the front!!

I started hand stich quilting via a class when I was pregnant with our first son. When I had four sons under the age of 6 1/2 I put it on hold - one little piece mising could ruin a whole project and really set mommie off. I was ever so glad I wasn't a pioneer woman who HAD to make quilts for her family!!
Our first grandchild will arive with in the next two weeks and I decided I wanted to make her a quilt - but we've also had a 70% decrease in salery since the first of the year . . . so I hit the Salvation Army and Goodwill Stores ;-} Cotton pj pants, ladies and mens shirts, ladies skirts . . . found wonderful fabris - so I now have a variety of contrasting combinations for the two fabriced pattern I'm using - all at wonderful prices - and lots left over for future projects (or grand children).
Isin't being creative FUN?!!!

My friend Jen makes the cutest blankets with that same concept--except that she uses really cute wash cloths--the ones with cute embellishments sewn on them in the bathroom section at Target on the front. They can be used to put a baby down on in the park or whatever and because the front is made with wash cloths they are so absorbent. I envy creative people!

I like to use sheets for the backing of any quilts I make. You can either use solids or fun prints. Walmart has a store brand that runs about $5 dollars for a flat twin sheet-- just thought I'd share that with you :-)
Oh.... by the way-- your quilt is super caute!!

Great looking quilt! Did you take a class to learn how to make quilts? The dish towels is a great idea. You know originally that's what people did when they made them, they used what they had! You are so smart! Jackie
